Govt. launches 'Udayan' channel to target East PC polls

Opposition parties are accusing that the government has launched a new television channel specifically to target the May 10th polls for the Eastern Provincial Council.

Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation yesterday (May 01st) started 'Udayan', which will be based in Batticaloa.

The government said its launch coincides with the East elections and that it will cater especially to the people in the North and the East.

The new channel is expected to raise awareness on the security and development initiatives launched by the government to ensure peace and restoration of democracy in the country.

Televised in European and Middle Eastern countries and rest of the world through the satellite channel 'TV Lanka', it will enlighten audiences on the special programmes embarked on by the government.


Livelihood of the Eastern people, their co-existence and cultural heritage and the new life they started after the liberation will be telecast to the outside world by the new channel.

Different programmes such as talks by scholars, interviews and information carried by the Tamil newspapers will be among the special features of the new channel.
