Printing of 20m textbooks halted

The ‘Ravaya’ publication of May 03rd reports that the process of printing over two million school text books are facing a standstill after the Education Ministry has failed to pay the printers.

The news report titled ‘Printing of 20m textbooks halted is as follows:

The Vishwalekha Printers in Ratmalana were assigned to print 68 types of school text books for the year 2008.

Even though 52 types have already been handed over to the Education Ministry, they are yet to be paid an amount of Rs. 180 m for the purpose.

Therefore, the Vishwalekha Printers had stopped printing the remaining 16 types of textbooks, a senior official of the institution said.

Mentioning that the entire order cost around Rs. 300m, the official said that the institution faces grave problems to complete a order under a backdrop where there it is not paid when due.

On contacting the Commissioner General of Educational Publications, W.M.N.J. Pushpakumara, he said that according to the original agreement, the government has paid 40 per cent (Rs. 120m) of the cost and the rest would be paid after the order was completed.

Responding that Mr. Pushpakumara’s statement was incorrect, the Sarvodaya Vishwalekha Priters said that they would consort to legal action on the matter.
