The protestors that sought to disarm Pillaiyan group arrested

morning, police arrested the group that was protesting in front of the office of the Election Commissioner since yesterday (06) urging to disarm Pillaiyan Group and other armed factions who were contesting the Eastern Provincial Council election.
Two lorries of the Colombo Municipal Council filled with garbage are parked in front of the Election Commissioners office emanating a sharp stench.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe and several UNP MPs came to the place to protest the police action.

Mr. Wickramasinghe pledged to send more people to replace the arrested persons and thousands would be sent if they too were arrested. He said that the unarmed persons were arrested whilst a 23 year old youth named Balasundaram who was arrested at Batticaloa with arms was released under the instructions of the Defense Secretary.

UNP General Secretary Thissa Aththanayaka, MPs Ravi Karunanayaka, K.N. Choksy and Mohammed Maharoof were also present and they later met the Election Commissioner to clarify their position.
